Consensus alternatives for life-science research in 2026

Consensus is an AI search engine for scientific papers. In our test of 50 life-science research questions, Arca scored 84.50 and Consensus 82.54, the closest result of the four tools we tested. SciSpace scored 80.93 and Elicit 80.68.
About Consensus
Consensus was founded in 2021 by Eric Olson and Christian Salem, who met as Division 1 teammates. It is based in San Francisco and has raised about $45 million, most recently $30 million in May 2026 led by GreatPoint Ventures. It says more than 10 million people have used it.
Consensus searches academic papers from Semantic Scholar, OpenAlex and publisher partners. It ranks results by citations, recency and journal reputation. Its best-known feature is the Consensus Meter, which shows how many studies say yes, no or possibly to a question. Pro and Deep modes run a research agent, and a Deep review reads 50 to 100 papers.
| Plan | Price, billed annually | Highlights |
|---|---|---|
| Free | $0 | 10 Pro messages and 3 Deep reviews a month |
| Pro | $12 per month | Unlimited Pro messages, 15 Deep reviews a month |
| Deep | $45 per month | 200 Deep reviews a month |
It is the cheapest of the tools we tested, at about $0.21 per question on our runs.

Arca
Arca is built for regulatory, clinical and quality teams in pharma and medtech. Consensus searches papers only. Arca also queries more than 250 public sources, including FDA databases, device-vigilance reports and clinical trial registries, and reads a company's own documents in Veeva Vault and SharePoint. Every claim links to the passage it came from.
Arca's answers cited 7 sources on average. Against Consensus it won 17 questions, lost 16 and tied 17, so the two are close on paper research alone. The gap opens when the question needs a label, a recall or a submission, which is what the LifeSci Diamond benchmark tests.
Elicit
Elicit alternatives covers it in more depth. It is the strongest choice for formal systematic reviews and data extraction tables.
SciSpace
SciSpace alternatives covers it in more depth. It bundles paper chat, literature reviews and writing tools, and suits students and academics.
Undermind
Undermind runs long, exhaustive searches over Semantic Scholar's 200 million papers. It suits researchers who need every relevant paper on a narrow topic. Pro costs $75 a month for industry users and $20 for academics.
Choosing between them
Choose Consensus for quick, low-cost answers from the literature. Choose Arca when the answer has to hold up in regulatory or quality work, with papers, public regulatory records and your own documents behind it.
